FSA Policy Statement PS12/10: Deposit Protection

 

The financial services regulators require all banks, building societies and credit unions to prominently display posters and stickers in branches and on websites explaining which deposit guarantee scheme applies to their customers’ deposits. These rules will take effect from 31 August 2012.

Materials for deposit-takers with a single brand/trading name

A firm that accepts deposits under a single brand or trading name must prominently display the compensation sticker and compensation poster in each branch in the following ways:

  1. displaying the compensation sticker or compensation poster in the branch window; and
  2. displaying:
       (a) the compensation sticker at each cashier window or desk; and
       (b) the compensation poster inside the branch.

It is recommended that your firm works with a designer to insert the name of your firm into the stickers and posters, as well as a professional print firm. Clear instructions for your designer and printer are included with each file you download.

A firm that accepts deposits under multiple brands or trading names must prominently display the compensation sticker and compensation poster in each branch in the following ways:

  1. displaying the compensation poster in the branch window; and
  2. displaying:
       (a) the compensation sticker at each cashier window or desk; and
       (b) the compensation poster inside the branch.

It is recommended that your firm work with a designer to insert the name of your firm, along with the names of the brands you share a licence with. It is also recommended that you work with a professional print firm. Clear instructions for your designer and printer are included with each file you download.

Optional materials for Credit Unions with a single brand/trading name

Your firm is required to display stickers and a poster prominently in branch, including a leaflet available on request. If your firm has no permanent location, you are expected to display materials with equal prominence. 

All PRA authorised credit unions should have been sent a sample pack of materials.

It is recommended that you work with a professional print firm. Clear instructions for your printer are included with each file you download.

Deposit takers who do not operate branches

Deposit takers who do not operate branches or whose branches are not accessible to customers would not be required to display posters or stickers in branches. But, as is the case with credit unions with no permanent location, we would expect the FSCS material to be displayed with equal prominence wherever or whenever there is customer contact.

All deposit-takers are required to have leaflets to be made available on request for customers in branch.

Information on websites for all deposit-takers 

Where a deposit taker has a website, the specified deposit protection information should be displayed in a way that best brings the information to the depositor’s attention. It is recommended that the information is displayed on the front page of the website or a pop-up box when logging on. Mobile banking sites are also to be considered, those that are accessed by mobile handsets and tablet computers.

Single brand/trading name

A firm that accepts deposits under a single brand or trading name must, on pages of its website where it advertises new accounts operated by any of its branches, in a way that best brings the information to depositors' attention:

  1. display prominently (in electronic form) the compensation sticker; and
  2. provide from the sticker an electronic link to the compensation leaflet.
